Chris has a long history as a writer and producer in television, most recently having served as Executive Producer on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. We are thrilled to have him as part of the HANNIBAL team. His chair, on the other hand, has a much less storied past (but we are still thrilled to have him!).

Katie O’Connell talks to TBI Vision

The US arm of [Gaumont International Television] is also launching a second scary title next year and is currently in production with Hannibal, written by Pushing Daisies’ Bryan Fuller, which was ordered straight to series by NBC.

The fact that a major broadcast network has commissioned a 13 episode series based on Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter is revealing.

Gaumont’s  CEO Katie O’Connell says that the series is more of a psychological thriller with ‘Hitchcockian’ suspense rather than a slasher flick. “It’s elegant horror with wit,” she says. “We are doing the show for NBC not FEARnet.

Historically there was a little bit of resistance; if a show was too scary the networks wondered if people would watch it and also whether you can hold the suspense on TV,” says Chiller’s Vitale. “Now producers and broadcasters have figured out how to make shows on commercial TV that are character based. It’s not about the gore or the killing, it’s not just about the slasher, it’s about the relationships and the characters.

TVLine: Gina Torres is Phyllis "Bella" Crawford

Gina Torres, star of Cleopatra 2525, Alias, and Firefly, has been cast as Jack Crawford's wife, Phyllis "Bella" Crawford, who has a big impact in The Silence of the Lambs.

Their meeting is described in The Silence of the Lambs:
"They had met in Livorno, Italy. He was Army, she NATO staff, and she was Phyllis then. They walked on the quays and a boatman called "Bella" across the glittering water and she was always Bella to him after that. She was only Phyllis when they disagreed."

It is worth mentioning that the events of The Silence of the Lambs won't occur
within the timeframe of the seven seasons of Hannibal. In The Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal says he has been incarcerated at the Chesapeake State Hospital for the
Criminally Insane for eight years, and this incarceration will start at around the end of
Season 2 or start of Season 3 of Hannibal (assuming each season corresponds to
one year).

Gina Torres previously worked with Bryan Fuller as grifter Lila Robinson on Pushing Daisies. She will juggle this recurring role with her full-time job on USA Network’s Suits.

This is brilliant casting not only because Gina Torres is a fantastic actress,
but she is also married to Laurence Fishburne (Jack Crawford) in real life:

Episode 1 Title

The title of the pilot is "APÉRITIF"

A Note on "Apéritif"

An apĂ©ritif  is either an alcoholic beverage or a light snack
that precedes a meal to stimulate the appetite.

In the novel "Hannibal" Chapter 54:
"In crystal, the doctor was torn between sizes in his aperitif glasses, and chose a chimney ballon for brandy, but in wineglasses there was no question. The doctor chose Riedel, which he bought in two sizes with plenty of room for the nose within the rim."

Variety: Katie O'Connell discusses Hannibal

NBC series "Hannibal," which looks at the early relationship between Hannibal Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham, is clearly a dark tale, but with "Pushing Daisies" Bryan Fuller writing and exec producing, it will also have its lighter moments.

"Yes, we are dealing with macabre subject matter, but you will find the tone of 'Hannibal' delights and surprises at the same time," says Katie O'Connell, CEO at Gaumont Intl. Television, which is producing and selling the series.

Hannibal heads to France, Canada and Germany

MIPCOM: Broadcasters in France and Canada have picked up Hannibal, the TV series about Thomas Harris’s big-screen baddie Hannibal Lecter.

Gaumont International Television has licensed the 13-hour series to Canal Plus in France for pay-TV and CityTV in Canada for free-TV. The show has already sold to ProSieben in Germany.

As evidenced by these sales, Hannibal is proving to be an incredibly successful and sought-after title across all forms of media in all parts of the world” said Erik Pack, head of international distribution and coproduction for the distributor.

Gaumont International Television, the sales arm of French film studio Gaumont, will be in Cannes next week shopping Hannibal as well as Netflix commission Hemlock Grove and its reworking of 1960s movie Barbarella for Canal Plus.

TheProvince.com: Mads Mikkelsen Interview

"Hannibal Lecter has his own morals. And he is extremely in tune with them. He is a master of empathy, but he's turned that into a weapon. So he is very interesting on many levels, because if you violate his moral code, he eats you."

Mikkelsen laughs, indulging his dry Scandinavian wit.

"I tell you, I wasn't so sure about doing Hannibal. But two minutes after I was pitched, I asked the producer - 'Can you do that on TV?' - and his answer was yes. Those two minutes turned into two hours ..."

Hannibal is slated to air sometime in 2013, but Mikkelsen will be doing yet more rounds of press for A Royal Affair - which is currently on the festival circuit - as well as The Hunt, in addition to more feature work.

As long as there is something tough enough to chew on, Mikkelsen will be there. "The beauty of any interesting character, even the worst, is that they truly believe in what they are doing. Even Hitler thought he was right. That's why people are interesting to me. Everyone has their own moral bar."
